Spa Cents Part 2

September 27th, 2011

Part two in a series of articles for suggestions on how to make your beauty dollars go further!

Buying Retail Products

Many spas now have developed their own cosmetics lines. For instance, Donato Salon and Spa, features Donato products. This is a good consideration because these products are a little cheaper than big name spa brands. Try them out. Find one you love? Send it in to Spa Spy for a review!!

Most product lines have one really amazing product. For example, in my opinion Darphin’s bar none best product is their purifying balm. It gets rid of acne, but since it’s a balm it doesn’t dry you out. It shrinks pimples in no time, and for those of us who have acne, once a week, I use it as a night cream and I wake up beautiful. Ask your esthetician, what is the best product from the lines they carry. You can supplement a cheaper beauty line with that one really great spa product.

Look for gifts with purchase. Check department store counters. I know that Spa fanatics are gasping in horror that I am suggesting department or even drugstore products, but there are many great companies out there. If you like Lancôme makeup, buy when there’s a gift with purchase on, and you can great things like eye makeup remover free. I know a lot of women who detest buying eye makeup remover and this is a great way to get those small products that you have to have without really paying for them. Just keep in mind, that if there is a GWP be sure that you are only buying what you’re actually going to use, otherwise it’s moot.

Spas are also offering gifts with purchases, so get on their email lists. Also, spas are offering discounts on products when you have a facial or spa service. That is the time to get your spa brands cheaper at a time when you were going to have a service anyway.

Avoid buying online from anyone other than a licensed seller of spa products. There are people out there who have gotten their hands on old product that was supposed to be destroyed, product that has expired, been stolen and a myriad of other reasons. This is why they are so cheap! You don’t know what you’re buying and there are no guarantee’s on the products, and if they are expired they are not suitable for use and can cause damage.
Many times you can order online through the manufacturer, for example Darphin: you can shop online and with a minimum order you can also be eligible for free shipping. Just be sure you’re at the real brand’s website. (Hint: the brand has usually purchased the website “brand”.com)

When you are at the spa, avoid buying fancy body products. They are usually disappointing, or comparable to mainstream brands. Save your money for cleanser, moisturizer, eye cream and a good foundation. These are your necessities!

Hair Products

It is pretty hard to find drugstore brands that are as good as the salon brands. This is just a fact of life that we need to consider. (I know there are people who will argue with me, please send me your brands and I’ll give them a try.) In my opinion, if you are on a budget, buy a good shampoo and conditioner. That is your necessity. I like to buy from my stylist because then s/he knows exactly what I am using and can suggest something new or answer questions. If they didn’t sell it to you, they may not be able to help you figure out why it’s not working. Try the BSO’s (Beauty supply outlets) etc. just be sure to check for expiry dates, often these places are buying at discounts from the manufactures and usually with good reason. Styling products can be purchased at BSO’s, Trade Secrets etc. at a cheaper price too, but again, double check dates. I have been burned, buying something from Trade Secrets and it’s turned, or they changed the formula so my stylist used the new formula on me, but I bought the old formula (old stock) from Trade Secrets and it didn’t work the same way. Formula changes happen for a reason!

If you can’t afford the salon hair care products, look for drugstore brands that offering a money back guarantee. Pantene is the first one that comes to mind. I’ve tried Pantene and if I can’t afford my salon brand, that is the brand I go to. Also, I have been pleased with Tresemme Heat Tamer Spray. I actually buy this one over the salon brands because it’s just as good. When you are at the drugstore ask about the return policy on opened hair products. As long as you are not a compulsive returner, they will often exchange a product that isn’t satisfactory.

Don’t be afraid to ask your stylist. “If I can only buy one hair product what should it be?” “If you had to pick a drugstore brand, what would you choose?”

Comment with your favourite drugstore brands!

Spa Cents Part 1

September 27th, 2011

The first in a series of articles for suggestions on how to make your beauty dollars go further!

Make the most of your Beauty Budget Dollars

In Spa:
Mani/pedi combo deals are a cheap pick me up with instant gratification. Avoid chop shops (see article: Sterilization in Spas – A Must Read). Try a nail bar, they usually have the good prices and are professional and clean

Investments
Often spas offer packages. You can buy five facials at a discounted price. But keep in mind you must pay upfront for this kind of package, and very rarely, they do expire. Get all the details up front before you pull out your wallet. There are many bulk services you can purchase such as massages and laser. Shop around for variety, but be sure you have one facial at that spa before you buy a package!! Same goes for laser treatments and peels. Many laser places now are offering to “Open and account” for you, where you can get multiple sessions for a year, for one upfront price.

Go with Groupon, Teambuy or other related discount purchase programs. This is a great way to find a new favourite spa, or to have a cheap “pick-me-up.”

If you have limited manicure funds, buy the nail polish they use on you. You can do your own touch ups and make your mani last a lot longer. Invest in a good hand cream too! Again, it will lengthen your mani. This means you only buy 1 polish per season at around $10, and a good hand cream will run you around $15, but save you loads in the long run. Same goes for pedicures!

Hair Services:
If you don’t want to do your own colour, highlights and lowlights have more life span than full colour treatments.

If you see a senior stylist for your cut and colour, try a junior if you just want a blow out.

If you want an updo for a wedding or other really important event at a salon you’ve never been to, pay for the trial unless you are very brave!

S.S.

Attention Groupon, and Teambuy Users (Clients and Spas)

September 27th, 2011

Please note: I am in NO way dissing Groupon, TeamBuy, WagJag or any related programs. I think they are fantastic for both the companies participating and the consumers using them.

With Groupon and other related programs, in order to participate the company must offer products and services at insane discounts, typically 60% or more. (Great for us!) This gives companies an opportunity to build customers at a quick rate, get lots of exposure and in the long run make money through “gaining and retaining” customers.

That being said, wouldn’t you think that the spa’s offering Groupons would treat each person like a superstar in order to achieve the “Retaining” part? So why are Groupon members treated like crap? Is it because we didn’t pay full price for a spa service? Do Groupon members not tip well? I’m not alone in this, many have experienced this type of treatment in spas.

I’m aware that many people are not loyal to any spa (in my line of work, loyalty is obviously difficult), especially with Groupon programs. They float from promo to promo without giving it a second thought, and this is hard for businesses to sustain. But let’s say that 1% of Groupon customers would become loyal and return in the future. That’s 1 of every 10 customers coming back. If you sell 50 Groupons, you have a chance at potentially retaining 5 people. Spas should be treating each Groupon customer as if they are that 1%. If you just treat each client as a client and give the best possible service your retention and even referrals can be a lot higher.

So I just wanted to bring this idea out in the light, so Groupon and the like members are aware that there is a consequence when it comes to buying discount spa services: poor treatment. Keep doing them, because it gives you a cheap way to interview spas to see which one you like. The spas who do treat you well despite of your huge discount, are the ones to go back to.

Attention Spa Owners: You are being interviewed every time any customer walks through your door, even those who are just picking up a menu. Treat people well and you’ll get a good review and all those Groupons will have paid off!!

Tonyc Salon & Spa in Fairview Mall

September 27th, 2011

Tonyc Salon & Spa
Fairview Mall Toronto
1800 Sheppard Ave. East
Toronto, ON
M2J 5A7
(416) 493-4571
http://tonycsalon.ca/

Well, first off, the pictures on the web site make this look a lot better than it does in person, but that’s pretty normal.

It is a very typical mall hair salon. Walk ins are welcome. You can book with a junior, senior stylist etc. I love having that option. My stylist was very friendly, and gave me great service. Due to a bit of a language barrier I didn’t get exactly what I wanted, so if I were to go back I would bring in a picture of how I usually wear my hair.

The salon is typically clean for a hair salon, and I didn’t get the chance to go to the spa side, but it appears separate enough from the hair section that sound would probably not be a problem when you’re seeking quietness in the spa. I will test this theory in a few weeks and update you.

It’s a busy salon, which is a good sign, especially for a mall, though Fairview is a busy mall. Tonyc has 8 locations around southern Ontario, many of them are in Toronto. I love Fairview because it’s like the Eaton Center, the Don Mills Subway station is connected to the mall, which makes it really easy to get to. There is lot’s of parking, though expect it to be typically busy on a Saturday just like everywhere else.

Customer service was great. I was taken care of right away and everyone was very friendly.

The Anti-Aging and Laser Clinic

September 27th, 2011

The Anti-Aging and Laser Clinic
385 Jane Street
Toronto, Ontario M6S 3Z3
416-767-0404
www.antiagingwellness.ca

I have been consistently going to the Anti-Aging and Laser Clinic once a month for about four months. I have been doing bikini line laser. (Laser hair removal is awesome by the way!).

Through my experience, the person wielding the laser is fantastic at it. They are fast and accurate. I’ve seen two different specialists, one of which is the owner. The laser doesn’t hurt as much as I thought it would. It’s more like a rubber band being slapped against your skin. I know the lasers vary depending on the manufacturer, so their particular laser is relatively pain free.

The owner is usually manning the phones. She is very abrupt and sometimes off putting, but when you get there in person, she is more friendly. The salon is fairly clean, if you ignore the fact that you are greeted by a dog, (a cute dog, but really?) and the rest of the staff are friendly. My problem with the Anti-Aging Clinic is that my appointments sometimes don’t get booked on the computer, even though she has written the appointment on a card for me. It takes me an hour to get there because I am on the opposite side of Toronto, so it is frustrating to go all that way only to turn around and go home again.

As an esthetician, I make it a point to remember my clients’ names even if they only see me once a year. It’s just good customer service and shows that you actually care. It’s a part of this business. At the Anti-Aging Clinic,
they ask me every single time I go in if it’s my first visit. This particular place is not big enough to have that kind of anonymity. (Not like the Elmwood). Is it so hard to remember people’s faces, not even a name, but just to know that they have indeed been there before? I just find it hard to accept because I am greeted by the owner every time and she has done the services on me.

This is, I assure you not an egotistical thing, though many will think that anyway. There is so much competition in the spa, laser, salon world, I wish owners would realize that a trip to the spa is a treat, and poor customer service ruins our treat and can even instill post-salon guilt, thinking we wasted our “Treat Money” on something we didn’t even enjoy. (Husband asks “How was the Spa?” you don’t want to have to say “Well…it kinda sucked.” That’s just wrong.)

I would love to continue to go there if my appointments were always booked properly, but I am going to find another laser place to go, not just to review but also for myself.

The face peel I received there was great and reasonably priced at $70. My skin looked really great thus making me feel great. If you live in that area (Bloor west), I would recommend you try it. I don’t think it is special enough to travel a great distance to go.

Customer Service Rating: ★★☆☆☆
Location Rating: ★★★★☆ It is right on the bus from Jane Subway Station, the bus stops right in front of the salon.
Cleanliness Rating: ★★★☆☆ Would be a lot higher without the dirty dog.
Overall Overall Rating: ★★★☆☆

Review: Jenny Nail Salon in Hamilton

June 6th, 2011

Jenny Nail Salon

525 Mohawk Rd E,
Hamilton, ON, L8V2J5
905-575-5259

This is what we refer to in the industry as “Chop Shops.” They are usually walk-in nail salons, that also do waxing and have facials on the menu, but have probably never booked one. These are the salons that are in a constant state of filth, and where double dipping in the wax pot is a very scary health risk.

I booked a waxing appointment. What a mistake. They took me to the esthetics room, which was just a corner with a curtain, like in a hospital, only dirty. The bed had a dirty white towel on it and I was expected to sit on it in just my thong as it was a bikini wax. Scary. By the way, most salons put paper down for waxing appointments, just like in your doctor’s office which is replaced every single time. The wax pot had a stick stuck to its side and clearly she was not only going to double dip, but as with most of the chop shops, she was going to wax me with the last person’s stick!!!!

Unbelievable. Do Not Go To This Salon! Even for nail services. If they don’t clean up in between wax services, they don’t clean up in between nail services. If the person before was bleeding from their cuticle (which is quite common in these places), and they have a communicable disease, and you were cut during your appointment with the same tools used on the last client (which is almost always the case in these places), you can get that communicable disease. Sometimes, that’s as scary as AIDS or HIV because they obviously don’t screen their clients.

RUN!

Spa Review: The Magnolia House Spa

June 6th, 2011

The Magnolia House Spa has two locations. One is in Grimsby, the other is in Waterdown. I’ll be reviewing the Waterdown location.

20 Main Street North
Waterdown, Ontario
http://magnoliahousespa.com/

I love the Magnolia House Spa. I was just there a few weeks ago for a full body massage. The Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) was fabulous! Upon arrival, you are offered a choice of beverages. I had the cranberry, orange sparkling drink, which was beautifully garnished with a fresh slice of orange. I had the luxury of filling out my forms in a room that looks like a sitting room of a really fabulous mansion, including a fireplace. Spa music and smells all around me, tantalizing my senses. Cell phones are asked to be shut off. Fabulous! I had a very thorough consultation with my exceptional RMT. What would I like to focus on, do I have any injuries, any places that should be avoided, diet, vitamin deficiencies etc. The massage was wonderful. Of course this is not relaxation massage and there is a big difference. This is the deeper massage that actually affects the muscles in between your bones and joints as opposed to a relaxation massage using long, gentle efflourage movements. My only real criticism is that the massage lotion had no scent. I’m normally given the option to update my massage with an aromatherapy treatment, in which case I always do! But I was not asked this time.

The spa was incredibly clean, and the customer service was exceptional. They also had a cute boutique in the reception area, in which I had to purchase some excellent olive oil and lavender “Soap of Mersaille.” (Of course!) Which, for those fellow boutique soap lovers, is one of the best soaps you can buy. I love being able to take a bit of the spa home with me, especially when it only costs a few extra dollars.

Since the massage was performed by an RMT I was also able to claim it on my work benefits and be reimbursed most of the cost.

The location in Waterdown is great if you live in the area, or around Hamilton, but if you’re coming from Toronto, it’s not convenient. Although, if you are planning a trip out that way, I would strongly suggest getting a treatment from The Magnolia House Spa.

Spa Review: Maison Fritz in Hamilton

June 6th, 2011

They Have three locations, I am reviewing the Stone Church Location, as I have not been to the others.

Maison Fritz
5008-1795 Stone Church Rd E,
Stoney Creek, ON L8J 0B4
905-667-1802

http://www.maisonfritz.com/

Maison Fritz is a very clean salon. They are super friendly! For hair services you can choose from a Junior Stylist, a Stylist or a Senior Stylist. There is obviously a price difference, but the junior stylists are still very good, if you want to save a little money. The customer service here is great and the salon has been around for forty years. All of the locations are new and modern and clean.

For my hair services, I have received the best consultations I’ve had in a really long time. One of my best experiences was when my stylist was running late. Instead of just letting me sit there, I was brought to shampoo area and given an amazing shampoo and scalp massage. The price for a junior stylist for wash, cut and style is $35, Stylist is $45 and Senior Stylist is $50. It’s so nice to have three choices, especially when everyone is on a tight budget these days.

They use Dermalogica in their esthetics, which is pretty run-of-the-mill product line. Not my personal favorite, but many clients love it. They have great prices on esthetics. My favorite are the spa packages which are extremely reasonable. Personal favorite is:the Half-Day Retreat. This includes a 1 hour massage, facial, spa pedicure, a wash and blow dry and light makeup. $215. There is also a glamour day for $155 which I would suggest before a big night out, a wedding or some good personal pampering time.

I really like the fact that I’m not pressured or guilted into buying product. My stylist tells me what he’s using on my hair and that it’s available, but he’s not pushy. I feel like I can ask questions without getting a sales pitch. Let me tell you, I buy more product when I’m not being pressured!

This is a great salon if you’re in the Hamilton, Stoney Creek and Dundas area, with locations in each. Check them out!

Spa Review: Venus Victoria Salon and Spa in Toronto

June 6th, 2011

Venus Victoria Salon and Spa

717 The Queensway
Etobicoke, Ontario, M8Y 1L4
Tel: (416) 251 – 6778

http://www.venusvictoriaspa.ca

Obviously it has been a while since I’ve been to Venus Victoria Salon and Spa. I can’t find the menu or a business card, but I will give a review anyway. Keep in mind this was over a year ago and things can change very quickly for better or worse.

Venus is located in the Etobicoke area of Toronto. It is a large spa that includes tanning. The staff are very friendly and the salon is pretty clean. It’s also pretty busy, which can mean that it has good service and that’s why people go there.

I used to go there quite regularly when I lived in the Mimico area, and was mostly satisfied with all of my services. Sometimes it was a challenge to book an appointment, but for the most part, it was okay.

The prices are reasonable, and it is right near the TTC. The Royal York bus goes stops about half a block from the Spa.

I would avoid waxing services here, because I had been burned and bruised more than once.

I’ve been corrected by Venus Victoria that their Manicures are 45 minutes and pedicures are 60 minutes. My mani usually only lasted half an hour, which is why I previously suggested you could pop in your lunch break. With this correction in mind, I would suggest not trying to squeeze one in.

I have to say, the salon was closed for a really long time, I’m not sure if was for renovations, or if it switched hands. It’s not always a good sign when a salon is closed. If I find myself there again, I will be sure to make an inquiry. Also, the web site has been “suspended”. Not sure that’s a good sign. (As of this update, the website is back up and running and looks beautiful).

If you read the comment that Venus Victoria has sent me, you can be assured that I will be visiting them very soon! Check back in two weeks to see how they are doing!

Cleanliness Rating: ★★★½☆

Location Rating: ★★★☆☆ It’s on the TTC, but I wouldn’t suggest traveling from somewhere else to go. I think there are better spas. It is a good one if you live in or around Mimico.
